Join us for rafting and canoeing some 60 miles of pristine wilderness along the San Jaun River in the four-corners area of Utah. Rabbi Mike Comins shares his unique approach to Jewish spirituality in wilderness and river guide, rabbinical student Eli Herb leads special activities for children age five to twelve. He’ll instruct beginners in the art of paddling and the joy of camping. Enjoy tasty Kosher dining with an unforgettable view.  Relax, learn, make friends, swim and explore inner and outer geography in one of the world’s stunning natural settings.

Itinerary

Day 1 – Tuesday June 19:  Optional shuttle from Durango airport. Meet for afternoon orientation in Blanding, Utah.
 
Day 2 – Wednesday, June 20:  Launch on the river at Mexican Hat. Travel through the sheer limestone-walled canyon of the Goosenecks. Paddling instruction for beginners. ~ 10 miles on the river.
 
Day 3 – Thursday, June 21:  Continue down river through rugged and beautiful desert. Hike the beginning of the Honaker Trail, a once-in-a-lifetime winding side hike up switchbacks scaling the wall of the canyon, where utterly magnificent views of the river corridor and surrounding terrain await.
 
Day 4 – Friday, June 22:  Travel downriver to Johns Canyon. Prepare for Shabbat by cooking in our Dutch Ovens. Welcome the Sabbath bride with festive Kabbalat Shabbat services. ~ 12 miles on the river.
 
Day 5 – Saturday, June 23:  Layover day for Shabbat.  Planned, optional activities include short walk, morning tefillot (services), swimming, moving meditation, kids activities, Torah discussion, hitbodedut alone time for spiritual practice, and sun-bathing. And all the free time you’d like.
 
Day 6 – Sunday, June 24:  Travel through legendary Government Rapid, to Slickhorn Gulch and enjoy a scenic side hike to clear pools carved out of solid limestone. Travel down to Oljato Wash to camp. ~ 22 miles on the river.
 
Day 7 – Monday, June 25:  Travel out to Clay Hills, then de-rig and drive to Blanding for the night on your own. ~ 8 miles on the river.
 
Day 8 – Tuesday, June 26:  Optional shuttle to Durango, CO airport.
