Join us for a canoeing adventure in the pristine wilderness of northern Maine on the well-named Moose Bow River. Experience the magic of an untamed river, visit waterfalls, observe moose, beaver, martens, eagles and hawks, relish the smell of a campfire, delight at the stars dancing in the night sky on this wilderness trip infused with Torah and Judaism. Enjoy delicious vegetarian meals made even tastier when cooked over an open fire while serenaded by nuthatches and chickadees.  Rabbis Mike Comins and Howard Cohen, two leading wilderness rabbis, will guide you on this wild river trip, sharing their unique approach to Jewish spirituality in wilderness. Relax, learn, make friends, swim and explore inner and outer geography in a stunning natural setting.

Itinerary

Day 1 – Tuesday August 21:  Meet for afternoon orientation and possible paddling introduction in Jackman, Maine.
 
Day 2 – Wednesday, August 22:  Put-in in at Holub Pond. Paddle from Holub pond to stream that flows into the Moose Bow River.  Paddling instruction for beginners and wilderness camping instruction ~ 7 miles of paddling. Camp at Camel Rips.
 
Day 3 – Thursday, August 23: Continue paddling the river through the pristine Maine wilderness. ~ 10 miles of paddling.  Camp at Spencer Rips.
 
Day 4 – Friday, August 24: Continue paddling through prime moose, bear and beaver country. Prepare for Shabbat by cooking in our Dutch Ovens. Welcome the Sabbath bride with festive Kabbalat Shabbat prayer. ~ 8 miles on the river to Attean Pond.
 
Day 5 – Saturday/Shabbat, August 25: Layover day for Shabbat.  Planned, optional activities include short walks, morning tefillot (services), swimming, wildlife camera hunting, moving meditation, kids activities, campcraft, Torah discussion, hitbodedut alone time for spiritual practice, and sun-bathing.
 
Day 6 – Sunday, August 26:  Paddle across Attean Pond to take out.

Each day includes wilderness skills instruction, informal torah study, guided and hitbodedut alone time for gaia-spiritual activities, optional tefilot, wildlife observation, natural history, fishing (ME license required) and swimming.
